the sun dial history
In 1972, the Henry Grady Hotel was demolished to make room for The Westin Peachtree Plaza. Designed by Atlanta’s own world-renowned architect, John Portman, the 73-story hotel is a cylindrical tower clad in reflective glass that consists of 1,073 rooms, 200,000 gross square feet of meeting and exhibition space (including the adjacent Building 1 at AmericasMart) and a dynamic, 90-foot sky-lit lobby that incorporates elements of nature with rich textiles, modern furnishings and thoughtfully-appointed seating zones. At 723 feet, the dramatic hotel was Atlanta’s tallest building until 1987, when it was surpassed by One Atlantic Center. Today, The Westin Peachtree Plaza is the fifth tallest building in Atlanta and remains the tallest hotel in the Southeast.
A mainstay of the Atlanta food scene, The Sun Dial Restaurant, Bar & View is uniquely positioned atop the iconic Westin Peachtree Plaza, a defining feature of the city’s skyline. The Sun Dial Restaurant, Bar & View offers unparalleled views and a distinct Atlanta dining experience that makes the most of the city’s proximity to local, farm-to-table ingredients. A tri-level complex, The Sun Dial features an upscale restaurant, a cocktail lounge and an observatory level with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the magnificent skyline from 723 feet above. Located in the heart of downtown, it is nearby some of Atlanta’s top business venues and tourist attractions including the Georgia Aquarium, Centennial Olympic Park, the World of Coca-Cola, College Football Hall of Fame, State Farm Arena, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
