NELSON MANDELA ARTWORK VISITS THE SUN DIAL
FOR 1ST ANNIVERSARY PAINT IN THE PODS

Atlanta (March 17, 2005) – For the first anniversary of Paint in the Pods, The Sun Dial Restaurant, Bar & View welcomes a special one-night-only exhibition of works by peacemaker, global icon of racial reconciliation, political prisoner, president, statesman and artist Nelson Mandela. This event is free and open to the public on Thursday, April 7 from 7 to 10 p.m.

The Sun Dial show will include works from Mandela's acclaimed “My Robben Island” series I and II. Imprisoned for 27 years, most of them at Robben Island, Mandela began creating chalk drawings and simple paintings in 2001 after he retired. While all the original pieces are in the possession of the Touch of Mandela organization, the lithographs like the ones that will be exhibited at the Sun Dial are sold for $10,000 to $24,000 each or upwards of $84,000 for an entire series to fans like Oprah Winfrey, Bill Clinton and Angelina Jolie. From the artwork sales, 50 percent of the funds are distributed by Mandela to various charities he supports. More information on all of Mandela’s art can be found at www.touchofmandela.com.

For the past year, the Sun Dial has presented a variety of art installations as part of its Paint in the Pods series, which takes place the first Thursday of every month. Each event features an exhibition by an art collective or gallery on the View Level atop the Westin Peachtree Plaza. Past Paint in the Pods hosts have included Atlanta Gallery Association, Fifth Class, Underground Art Project, Be Original Art and Skot Foreman Fine Art Gallery. All Paint in the Pods events are free and open to the public.
